Chapter 12

In chapter 12, Adelines sister, Lydia, had moved to Twain with her husband Samual, and his family. Samuels father had an affair with a woman he worked with. Samuel's mother had decided to move back to Tianjin after she found out about the affair, after Lydia had her baby, they decided to move back as well. A couple of months after their arrive, Samuel was arrested and accused of counter- revolutionary, because of his tainted background. Samuel was in jail for six months, during the six months, Lydia lived with Samuels mother, who she couldn't get along with. When Samuel was released, his mother instructed them that they needed to find a new place of residency. They decided to live with Niang's Aunt when news got to Niang she told Father to write them a letter saying they need to leave immediately, instead of leaving they decided to write a letter back that contained blackmail. Franklin who is Niang's 13-year-old son was returning home from a birthday party, had stopped and gotten a box strawberries, he then proceeded to eat the entire box of unwashed strawberries on the way home. A few days later he developed a sore thought and fever, his parent being gone he put on his skates, it was a very hot day, he then got a serve headache, soon became delirious and couldn't swallow. They took him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with Bulbar Polio, he was put on a ventilator and Niang never left his side. Niang had a huge event and since Franklin was improving she decided to go. That night Franklin had taken a turn for the worst and died. I think that in chapter 13 Adeline and her brothers will finally go to England to attend college, it probably won't be what she's thinking it will be like. I also think she's going to be made fun of and bullied for being Chinese women trying to become a doctor. I predict that she going to meet someone in England, and he's going to treat her badly. This chapter impacts the society by showing them that even though your rich and powerful, bad things can still happen to you. It also shows that blackmail is not the answer and it will most likely hurt you in the end. The mood/ tone is this chapter is gloomy and traumatic. It's gloomy because Samuel goes to jail and his father committed an affair. This chapter is traumatic because Franklin, who is just a little boy, dies of Bulbar Polio from eating unwashed strawberries.
