Comparison to Cinderella
The book Chinese Cinderella or Falling leaves" is very similar to the Cinderella Story, both books talk about their "evil stepmothers" and how they are mistreated by them. They also talk about the other children being favored over them. Both Cinderella and Adeline were left out of family outings and events. In the story of Cinderella her mother dies and her father remarries and women who have two daughters, in Adelines case, her mother also dies and her father remarries, but her stepmother had two children with Adelines father. They both mistreated their stepdaughters and had them do the thing they didn't want to do themselves, they would say mean and degrading things about them. The stepmother gave their stepdaughters hand- me-downs and old clothes. Adeline had four biological siblings, she was the youngest of the four. Niang, Adeline's stepmother, favored the four other children, plus the two of her own and would buy them new clothes, take them out, and give them money to take the bus to school. The Evil Step in cinderella would give her biological children, new clothes and dresses, money, and spending time finding them husbands. The story of cinderella is about her not being able to go to the major ball thrown by the price. The stepmother made her stay home and clean while she took her children to the ball, Adeline's stepmother would make her stay home and do school work while she took the other children and other family members out. This is how Chinese Cinderella and Cinderella are similar.
