Symbolism
One symbol in the book “Falling Leaves” is Adeline’s pet duck PLT or Precious Little Treasure. PLT is a duckling that Adeline received as a gift from Aunt Baba's friends the Huang’s. Adeline being the youngest and least loved, she got the scrawniest duckling. This duck symbolizes how Adeline is vulnerable, and the weak link of the family.
PLt is important to Adeline because it the first thing Adeline cared for, it's also important to her because it was the only gift she was ever given. PLT is also like an underdog and so is Adeline, so she feels like she can relate with it. PLT is important to the storyline because it displays all the injustices that have fallen on Adeline. An example of this symbol in the real world is when a litter of puppies, there is always a runt and that runt never gets chosen to be taken home, but when that one kid who's having a hard time, and doesn't feel loved, finally the runt gets taken home makes makes that person very happy, just like PLT did for Adeline.
